Thats right, you read the headline correctly, John Francis a.k.a “Planet Walker” will be attending our next meeting! Francis, is a nationally recognized environmentalist, a published author, the UN Ambassador of the Environment and an Associate Professor at UW-Madison. Infamously known as “Planet Walker,” Francis got his nickname when he walked across North and South America for 20 years straight; during these years Francis remained silent for 17 of them, not even speaking a word. While his trek began after he witnessed two oil tankers collide in the San Francisco Bay, it turned out to be much more than a fight for the environment. After obtaining both his Masters and Doctorate degrees without speaking, Francis concluded he could be a better environmentalist if students could learn from him. He now teaches an advanced-level capstone course in the Nelson Institute called “Planet Walking,” (and talks to awesome student organizations). REthink is extremely excited for this opportunity to host John Francis and we invite you to bring your friends! Come tomorrow with questions, we cannot wait!
* If you are unfamiliar with John Francis just listen to his TED talk. It’s so inspirational.
